Amidst the world’s increasing focus on sustainability issues, Bank of Taiwan today unveiled Taiwan’s first contactless credit card crafted from wood—the Green Go Card—marking a new milestone in its leadership of sustainable finance development. The announcement was made during the Bank’s anniversary celebration, which also honored outstanding personnel. This initiative not only symbolizes Bank of Taiwan’s innovative efforts in environmental stewardship, social common good, and responsible governance, but also underscores its continued commitment to spearheading sustainable financial practices.
As the backbone of the national financial system, Bank of Taiwan has continually responded to the Financial Supervisory Commission’s "Green Finance Action Plan." The Bank has also actively promoted institutional upgrades, elevated the Corporate Sustainability Development Committee into a functional committee, and voluntarily followed the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) to develop a net zero emissions strategy. Additionally, Bank of Taiwan became the first in Taiwan to pass the ISO 14068-1 carbon neutrality international standard verification for a contactless credit card in May. This achievement once again positions the Bank as a leader in guiding the financial industry towards a low-carbon transition, clearly demonstrating its steadfast dedication to implementing sustainable financial practices.
Bank of Taiwan has also accumulated numerous recognitions at home and abroad across sustainability, inclusive financing, fair treatment of customers, and product innovation. Highlights include winning both the "Domestic Bank - Best Wealth Management Team" and "Domestic Bank - Best Sustainability Promotion" at the "2025 Wealth Management Awards" of Wealth Magazine; receiving the Financial Supervisory Commission's top award for the "Program to Encourage Lending by Domestic Banks to Enterprises in Six Core Strategic Industries - Green and Renewable Energy Industries"; earning the "4th Taiwan Sustainability Action Award (TSAA)" in 2024; being honored with three awards, the "Golden Security Award," "Golden Quality Award," and "Sustainable Financing Award," from the Joint Credit Information Center; and receiving the "ESG Sustainability Excellence Award" from the British Standards Institution (BSI).
The Green Go Card is Taiwan’s first wooden contactless credit card made from cherry wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Delivering a natural texture while reducing plastic consumption, the card showcases Bank of Taiwan’s dedication to environmental protection and carbon reduction. The card's specially treated wood is moisture-proof, crack-resistant, and highly durable, ensuring it meets the demands of daily use. In terms of its manufacturing process, the card still requires the precise embedding of its EMV chip and NFC modules. It has undergone rigorous testing to ensure its security and performance are equivalent to standard credit cards. In addition, the Green Go Card has also successfully passed the rigorous review of international card organizations, earning professional recognition for its quality and stability. This ensures cardholders can use it with complete confidence. The Green Go Card not only demonstrates Bank of Taiwan’s careful selection of materials and product design, but also implements the three core pillars of sustainability: green consumption, charitable donations, and reforestation. Every transaction made with the card, whether for public transportation, supporting local sustainable brands, or contributing to tree-planting initiatives and charitable donations, will be transformed into a tangible contribution to the environment and society.
Bank of Taiwan pointed out that the Green Go Card blends an aesthetic design with financial functions, creating a new model that combines practicality and sustainable value. From concept development and material selection to its feedback mechanism, the card's design consistently reflects the ESG spirit. This underscores Bank of Taiwan’s ambition to deeply embed sustainable thinking into its product development. This card transcends its transactional role, guiding cardholders to embrace a lifestyle that supports sustainability through practical actions.
In the face of climate change and rapid social transformation, Bank of Taiwan continues its innovative practices to deepen positive connections with society and the environment, thereby giving finance a more profound public significance. Looking ahead, Bank of Taiwan will partner with every individual committed to sustainability, collectively moving towards a new era of prosperous coexistence and lasting greenery.
