BOT Calls for Joint Action on Environmental Protection and Green Sustainability

In response to the challenges of climate change and sustainable development, the Bank of Taiwan (BOT) actively supported global environmental initiatives such as “Earth Hour” and “World Earth Day”, “You Advocate, I Plant”, “Let’s Go Green Together” and other activities. The Bank takes this opportunity to encourage colleagues and customers BOT in caring about pay attention to climate change issues, demonstrating the financial industries commitment to environmental protection and fulfilling the responsibility of sustainable development.

For Earth Hour, BOT held the “You Advocate, I Plant” event that invited all colleagues and customers to turn off unnecessary lights for energy conservation. If every thousand people participate in the event, the Bank also promised to plant one sapling to practice corporate responsibility on the environment. The event attracted 32,280 participants including more than one-third of non-bank customers. This shows that the green initiative not only built up consensus among BOT staff but also spurred greater environmental awareness among the general public. In addition to turning off the signboard lights at all domestic operating locations (except ATMs) between for three consecutive days from March 21 to 23, the Bank also called upon all staff to turn off their lights for one hour between 20:30 and 21:30 on the evening of March 22 to support carbon reduction through direct action. To continue supporting the sustainability philosophy of environmental protection, BOT also launched the “Let’s Go Green Together” initiative for World Earth Day on April 22. The initiative encouraged people to practice low-carbon living through conservation of water resources, plastic-free living, recycling of used clothing, new vegetarianism, and green commuting to accumulate environmental influence though eco-friendly practices from daily life. For responding “Project Blue 2.0”, the Bank also extend their reach into marine conservation and works together for the sustainable ecology of Taiwan.

In addition, under the guidance of the Net Zero by 2050 target, BOT continues to implement energy conservation and carbon reduction, strengthen energy efficiency management, replace high-energy-consuming equipment year by year, and use of equipment with energy-efficiency labels, with remarkable results. Between 2022 and 2023, BOT Head Office and Wuchang Branch districts saved 324,941 kWh of electricity, 9,773 KL of water, and 7.58 KL of fuel, and total carbon reductions of 1,325.57 metric tons CO2e netted. The Bank were recognized as the 2024 Taipei City Net Zero Leadership Awards in Commercial Industry A and B category. In the future, BOT will continue to uphold its philosophy of “Prioritizing Both Financial Services and Social Responsibility” by putting corporate sustainability governance into practice and working with society to co-create a green future.
